"Lazarillo de Tormes" fue el primer libro del género "picaresque". Escrito en 1554 por autor desconocido, la historia representa las aventuras de Lazarillo un niño de clase social baja, sin padres para ayudarle en el mundo. Él necesito depender de amos para sobrevivir. La historia tiene siempre un tema anti-clerical por lo tanto, los amos entre ellos los clerigos numerosos, son crueles y egoístas. Ellos tratan a Lazarillo como un esclavo.

En la versión leíamos, Lazarillo parece que un niño inocente aprende con los años que sobrevivencia, necesito cambiar su vida cuando pueda. Él es fuerte (con capacidad de recuperación) y astuto. Él es confiado y tiene corazon. Tiene la capacidad para sobrevivir much hambre y palizas. Por la naturaleza del tema anti-clerical nuestro protagonista es simpático para destacar la hipocresía de la iglesia.
