El presidente de Argentina, Critina Kirchner, y su gobierno han tratado de reinar en la prensa y aumentar el control sobre la televisión y de licencias de radio. Kirchner apoya una ley que disminuye el poder de uno de sus principales enemigos políticos, el mayor grupo de medios de Argentina, Grupo Clarín .En un artículo de opinión en el Wall Street Journal, la periodista Mary O'Grady escribió "se encamina sin un regreso al gobierno autoritario". Kirchner afirma que la ley permitiría una mayor diversidad en los medios de comunicación, la apertura de las ondas de radio para la comunidad y grupos no gubernamentales carecen de los recursos de las grandes corporaciones.
