Desde el terremoto de enero pasado y el inicio de la temporada de lluvias en Haití, los trabajadores de la salud han temido una epidemia de cólera en el país. A mediados de octubre, algunas personas empezaron presentar síntomas de la enfermedad. Actualmente, casi 76,000 haitianos han contraído la enfermedad y más de 1700 personas han muerto. La enfermedad, que se transmite por agua contaminada, ha llegado en la capital de Haití, Puerto Príncipe, y ha diseminado rapidamente en las zonas más humildes y populosas de la ciudad. Con gran parte del país todavia sufriendo los afectos del terremoto, el agua limpia y la atención sanitaria siguen siendo difíciles de obtener. Con las lluvias, el agua contaminada se desborda en las calles, transmitiendo la enfermedad. El cólera es una enfermedad tratable, pero sólo si se trata rapidamente. Sin embargo, la infraestructura devastada en gran parte de Haití es una barrera enorme para la administración del tratamiento a los enfermos.
