Si no fuera periodista, sería lingüista porque pienso que el estudio del origen de las palabras es fascinante. Y pienso que es algo que los maestros deben que enseñar en sus clases. Para mí, como estudiante de biología, era muy útil aprender las raíces lingüísticas porque me podía descifrar otras palabras así. A menudo, estudiar la raíz de una palabra o un nombre te ayuda a mejor comprender su significado verdadero y complicado. Por ejemplo, la palabra “sabotaje” viene de la palabra francés “sabot” que significa zapatos. Según las historias, hace muchos años, había trabajadores anarquistas holandesas quien lanzaron sus zapatos de madera dentro el fuego para cerrar su fábrica. Entonces, de eso vino la palabra “sabotaje” para describir el acto de destruir algo a propósito. Por otro lado, a veces intentar estudiar el origen de un nombre crea más problemas. Hay palabras que han cambiado demasiado el significado, como “awful” en inglés que originalmente significaba “muy impresionante” pero ahora describe algo terrible. Y aún más difícil son los amigos falsos que odio.
