El maiz antiguo

El maíz comprende una gran parte de la economía agrícola de les estados unidos. El tipo de maíz que se cultiva en el mayor parte es transgénico para producir una cosecha robusto y uniforme. Pero esto cultivo es depende del pesticida y de fertilizante. Maíz se cultiva en una escale tan grande en eso país que el uso de los pesticidas y los fertilizantes es un grande problema por el medio ambiente. El uso de fertilizantes ricos en nitrógeno causa grande algas florece cuando el agua corre hacía en los ríos y el océano.

Pero hay un tipo de maíz antiguo que no requiere más fertilizante. Se encuentra en Oaxaca. Es muy especial porque es capaz de utilizar nitrógeno del aire. Secreta una sustancia pegajosa de sus raíces aéreas en la que bacteria fijadoras de nitrógeno puede vivir. Quizás esta es una solución anciana al problema moderno.
