El VI congreso del Partido Comunista de Cuba

En el VI Congreso del Partido Comunista en Cuba, el presidente Raúl Castro fue elegido para suceder su hermano como secretario del partido. En el último día del congreso, Fidel Castro hizo una aparición sorpresa y marcó su despedida política con un emotivo discurso.
El Congreso aprobó amplias reformas económicas al tiempo que se comprometió a continuar en el camino socialista de Cuba. Raúl Castro propuso la propuesta de limitar a dos períodos de cinco años los mandatos polítocos, por lo que ningún líder no podía permanecer en el cargo por el tiempo que su hermano hizo. 
Fidel Castro, que gobernó Cuba desde 1959, ha estado enfermo durante muchos años. Los dos hermanos, Fidel y Raúl, rara vez han sido vistos juntos en estos años y la aparición de ambos en el congreso fue un momento emocial. El discurso de Fidel Castro terminó con los dos hermanos alzando los puños, como un símbolo de la revolución y de la unidad.
