A principios de septiembre las cadenas de televisión informaron por muchos días sobre la mujer desaparecida, Gabby Petito. Me sorprendió que las noticias dedicaron tanto tiempo a una pareja joven en un viaje campo a través. Para mí, el tema más interesante que la cobertura expuesta fue "el síndrome de la mujer blanca desaparecida". No estuve consciente de este término acuñado por la periodista, Gwen Ifill. Ella mencionó el término en 2004 durante una mesa redonda de periodistas que lamentaron de los medios manía por cubren historias sensacionales y individuas, en vez de historias de crises humanas y internacional. Según Internet, Gwen Ifill dijo "si hay una mujer blanca desaparecida, va a cubrir esto, cada día".

En el área de la bahía, un presentador fue suspendido por presentar éste idea en su programa. La semana pasada un grupo de manifestantes se reunió en la oficina central de KTVU para expresar su frustración con la disparidad racial y las desigualdades en los reportajes.

Me preguntó también si la pareja (Gabby y Brian Laundrie) no hubiera publicada en Internet sus "empalagosos mensajes de amor", si hubieran tenido tanta atención cuando su viaje salió mal, o cuantas personas se preocuparían.

Tengo compasión por la familia de Gabby que debe lidiar con su muerte y la publicidad que ha venido con ella.
