Este articulo me sorprendió cuando dijo que los maya se desaparecieron. Aunque es verdad que el imperio maya no existe hoy en día, todavía hay millones de descendientes indígenas de los mayas que viven en Centroamérica, la mayoría en Guatemala. Quizás sea más exacto decir que el imperio maya se derrumbó, y que muchas de sus ciudades fueron abandonadas. En mi opinión, es muy importante que reconozcamos la presencia de los mayas modernos, y los efectos duraderos de la colonización que todavía se enfrentan.

Si bien es muy importante preservar esas ruinas anticuadas del imperio maya, también me pregunto: ¿que hacen los arqueólogos e historiadores para promover los derechos de la gente indígena moderna, incluso los maya? No es suficiente estudiar la historia y los artefactos de la gente antigua si no reconoce y respeta los descendientes de esta gente.
